Boom! What a win today in Knoxville as the Vols hosted the Missouri Tigers for their home opener. Tennessee took the W with a dominating 35-12 victory. The game was never really close as Tennessee put their foot on the gas and never really let up. Their were many highs and few lows during the game. But the one thing we are going to talking about today is Tennessee’s phenomenal offensive line A.K.A (also known as) The Tennessee Valley Authority!
This contest has been anticipated not necessarily because of Missouri, but because Tennessee finally had a Offensive line at 100%. This coming a few days ago with the news that Junior linemen Cade Mays becoming eligible to play. Boy did this Oline perform. Throughout the entire game the Vols, dominated the line of scrimmage, imposing their will on the Missouri defensive line. The Vols excelled in setting the line of scrimmage and moving to the secondary to cover linebackers. Look no further than for evidence than the Vols two headed monster at running back, Ty Chandler and Eric Gray these two combined for almost 200 yards rushing, with Gray averaging 6.6 yards a carry and Chandler 4.7. Beyond this it seemed as if quarterback Jarrett Guarantano had all day to throw and this allowed him to make some rather difficult throws at that. As a team Tennessee rushed for 232 yards.
This type of line play is something fans have yearned for in last years, the comment during the game was made that when Coach Pruitt for to Rocky Top their was only one starting linemen over 300lbs, now all 5 were well over that mark. Something else Vols fans haven’t had in a while is depth. While the Vols have one of if not the most talented line in the country, the have elite depth as well. The likes of Jahmir Johnson, Reiley Locklear, Jerome Carvin and K’rohn Calbet are all solid backups who could either start if need be or provide back up without missing a beat.
Today was the first time in awhile the Vols completely dominated the line of scrimmage, and let us all hope it’s something that we can get used to watching. This is also helpful to the fact the 5 star tackle Amarius Mims was on campus today to watch. Hopefully this made and impression on him as to the coaching ability of Coach Friend.
