Tennessee Basketball Sleeper Games

If you’re anything like me, you’re more than ready for basketball to start so that you can quit paying attention to football, well my friends the time is almost upon us. The Vols tip off on November 25th against Charlotte inside of Thompson-Bowling Arena. The 49ers had two players named to the pre-season all C-USA in Shepherd and Young. After sitting out a year due to transfer rules, Shepherd came and made an immediate impact last year averaging 14 points per game. Young was the C-USA freshmen of the year and averaged 12.5 points a game and a team leading 5.2 rebounds per game. Charlotte finished fourth in the conference and should be one of the favorites to win it this year, this should be a nice little test for a somewhat young Vols team.

Just two days later on November 27th, the Vols host VCU. Last year the Vols beat VCU on a buzzer beater from Lamonte Turner. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find much info on VCU so I headed to a VCU message board to see how they were feeling about their team. Though Jon Rothstein has VCU finishing 10th in their conference, their fans were not fans of that, saying they should be much better, so we will have to see, but it feels like this is one the Vols could possibly have some fun with.

On February 13th, the Vols will travel down to Louisiana to take on the Tigers of LSU, this LSU team is very deep and could probably beat any one on any night, but more importantly, this would be a chance to get a win against Will Wade, who is arguably one of the most shady figures in the SEC and let’s face it, should’ve been canned.

On February 27th, the Vols will travel to Auburn to take on the Tigers and Bruce Pearl. This game will always be on any Vols fans list as long as Bruce is the HC. Bruce will definitely coach them up and have them competing night in and night out, especially adding two top 50 players.

Now, I know what you’re saying, where’s Kentucky? Kansas? Well, those are on everyone’s list and well, I just wanted to be different. Obviously those will be fun games, but these are the ones that make me say “that’s a sleeper game” when I look at the schedule. Let me know what you think, any you agree or disagree with?
