Takeaways From Volunteers Victory over Vanderbilt

Anchor down! The Vols solidified who really owns the state of Tennessee off of a strongly played second half, that led to a 81-61 win for the good guys in orange, now onto my reactions.

DEFENSE- Have we talked about how good the Tennessee defense is? I feel like we haven’t…. The Vols held Vandy to 39.2% from the field and 21.7% from three and only 61 points as I mentioned earlier. For comparison, Vandy on average scores 74 points per game. They also did a fairly good job guarding Scottie Pippen Jr. though he did finish with 18 points as he was 5-12 from the field and 1-5 from three.

OFFENSE- The Vols had their offensive struggles, but for the most part, this was a pretty good offensive outing for the Vols. Scoring 81 points in a season where they average 76 per game as they shot 49% from the field and 33% from the three, nothing to really turn your nose at. Keon Johnson had his career high of 16 points on 4-8 from the field and 1-1 from three, he also scored 7 points from the charity stripe to help fuel his career high. Jaden Springer had an all around game finishing with 10 pts, 7 rebounds, 5 assist, and 3 steals.

MISCELLANEOUS THOUGHTS- Boy did Josiah Jordan James have his head in the game (if you saw the viral video he was a part of, you’ll get that reference) or what?! He finished with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 block, and 1 steal as he continues to be Mr. do-it-all for Tennessee.

The Vols travel to Florida for their next game this Tuesday (1/19) to take on the 6-4 Gators. That game is scheduled to tip at 7 pm and will air on ESPN, though it’s possible it will start on another channel while some team gets blown out by 30.
