Year 3 of the Jeremey Pruitt era is underway and the fan base wants to really see if he can make the jump to the next level. Most experts and the UT fan base are looking for Pruitt and the team to defeat one of the big four on the 2020-2021 schedule. Those four games include Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, and Alabama.
On one hand, a small portion of the Vols’ fan base thinks we’re going to beat all four. Let’s be realistic just for a minute or so. I’m about 99.9% sure that the Vols will be heavy underdogs in all four games this year.
So, with that being said, which game will the Vols pull the upset and what game does Jeremy Pruitt need to win?
Yes, I know the Vols have to travel all the way to Norman, OK. I also know that the Sooners were a college football playoff team last season and we all know that offensive-mastermind Lincoln Riley is their head coach. Tennessee will face the Sooners in week 2 which plays in the Vols favor considering the Sooners will more than likely start sophomore Spencer Rattler. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak across America, spring football was canceled and with a QB with little in-game experience, an early week 2 upset could happen. Considering Tennessee returns with almost every offensive starter minus two wideouts and TE, they have senior QB Jarrett Guarantano. Before you blow my article up saying he shouldn’t start, all I’m saying is—experience matters. He’s showed up in some big-time games the last two seasons. Not to mention Tennessee’s defense is returning a lot of starters plus additional depth. I’m going on the record to say that Tennessee will defeat the Oklahoma Sooners in week 2!
What game does Jeremy Pruitt need to win?
Gosh, I can’t express enough how much I hate the Florida Gators. In the offseason, Tennessee and Florida have had so many recruiting battles that have gone in Tennessee’s favor—the subject of multiple cheap shots at the Vols via social media. Florida coaches are getting upset at what the Vols are cooking in Knoxville.
Now listen, it’s hard for the Vols fan base to talk trash considering we’ve only won once in 13 years. This is why it’s really important for Jeremy Pruitt to pull off this upset. It’s going to be hard with senior QB Kyle Trask coming back for the Gators. The Volunteers will have a home-field advantage hopefully if fans are allowed to come to the games. Also, Tennessee has a warm-up game against FCS school Furman the week prior. Hopefully, our starters will be rested. Not only is this game for the win and loss columns, but it goes further in recruiting. If Pruitt wants to have success for the next few years, he’s got to pull off a victory against the Vols' most heated rivalry.
In closing, I think 2020-2021 is a season that could be a huge comeback for the program. I honestly believe Tennessee can really pull off an upset to set the team up for the next few years.
