Kentucky Women’s Basketball has had some ups and downs during coach Matthew Mitchell’s tenure. But I think we can all agree that this season is definitely an up for multiple reasons.

One huge reason is Rhyne Howard.

Howard is becoming a nationwide star for women’s college basketball. Rhyne Howard is averaging an SEC best with 23.2 points a game. She also adds 6.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game to those stats. Howard is taking the SEC by storm and seems to be a shoo-in for SEC player of the year in only her Sophomore year.

Last year, Howard was awarded SEC Freshman of the year, but no one saw this kind of jump coming. Currently, the Lady Cats are sitting 16-3 and ranked number 13 in the country. Kentucky has also seen other players show out, but Howard has been the leading scorer in 16 of 19 games. Howard has gotten even better throughout the season. Her crazy performances against some big-time competition have been unmatched. For instance, she once went on an 8-game scoring streak totaling over 20 points per game and during two of these games, she scored over 35 points!

So, with Howard, the Lady Cats are looking at the NCAA tournament that they have struggled to make as of late. It will take Howard playing at the highest level to make a deep run that we are all hoping for. With all that being said, it does look like Howard will be out for a few weeks with a hand injury. However, she should be back in time for the SEC tournament and the NCAA tournament.

Lastly, the future looks even brighter because Howard is only a sophomore. Also, the Lady Cats are bringing McDonald’s All-American Treasure Hunt. Looks as if the Lady Cats and Coach Matthew Mitchell have a bright future ahead of them. Buckle up Lady Cats Basketball fans!
